Skill Bands: What They Mean for Your Dancers

What a dancer skill band is, why an entry might be blocked, and who can change a band.

Some events check that a dancer is not entering below the standard they have already reached. If yours does, each of your dancers carries a skill band.

The bands

Band
Professional
Elite
Advanced
Intermediate
Novice

A dancer with none is Unrated, which is where everyone starts.

A band belongs to the dancer, not to one event or one organiser. It follows them wherever they compete on Kompdesk. That is the whole point: a dancer who reached Advanced at one competition cannot go back to a beginner section at the next one.

Why an entry says "not eligible"

Each level at an event admits up to a certain band. If a dancer on the entry is above it, the reason names the dancer:

Not eligible for the Novice level, which admits up to Novice: Sipho Dlamini is Advanced.

Each organiser decides what that means at their event:

At this eventWhat you see
Warn onlyThe message appears in amber and you can still enter that level. The organiser sees it too.
BlockThe level is greyed out and the entry cannot be submitted until you change it or the organiser waives it.

If you are blocked and you believe the band is wrong, contact the organiser. They can lower a band with a reason, or waive the single entry.

Dancing up is always fine. A Novice dancer may enter an Advanced section. Only the other direction is blocked.

If you add a dancer to an entry and the level suddenly becomes ineligible, that is why: the entry was fine before that dancer joined it.

Entries can raise a band

At most events that use skill bands, competing at a level raises the dancer to that level's band if they were lower. You will see a warning above the Save and Submit buttons before this happens:

Submitting this entry sets the skill band of Sipho Dlamini to Intermediate. Only an organiser can lower it afterwards.

Read that warning. Once the entry is submitted the band is set, and withdrawing or deleting the entry later does not put it back. If the entry is wrong, fix it before you submit.

This usually applies to solos only, because a dancer in an older group's routine has not personally reached that level.

Setting a band yourself

Open a dancer from your Dancers page and use Set band on their skill band card.

You can set a band and raise it. You cannot lower it. Raising only ever restricts that dancer, so it is safe for you to do. Lowering is what someone would do to sneak a dancer into an easier section, so it needs an organiser of an event that dancer is entered in, and they have to record a reason.

If a band is wrong and too high, ask the organiser. They can lower it, and the change is recorded on the dancer's history.

Unrated dancers

At most events an unrated dancer may enter anything. Some organisers require every dancer to have a band before entries can be submitted; if yours does, you will see a message at submit telling you which dancer still needs one.

Seeing the history

Every skill band card has a Show history link. It lists every change, when it happened, at which event, and who made it, including bands set automatically by competing. If something looks wrong, that history is what to send the organiser.
