What Is a "Section" in a Competition?

Understand what sections are and why certain category combinations may not be available.

A section is a specific competition category created by combining four dimensions:

DimensionExample
Age GroupMini (6–8), Junior (9–11), Teen (12–14), Senior (15 and over)
StyleContemporary, Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz
Skill LevelNovice, Intermediate, Advanced, Open
Performance TypeSolo, Duo, Trio, Small Group, Large Group, Battle

A section might be: "Junior Contemporary Advanced Solo" or "Teen Hip Hop Open Small Group".

Why Can't I Register for a Certain Category?

Not every combination of age group, style, level, and performance type has a section. Event organisers choose which sections to offer based on expected participation.

If you see "No section exists for this combination" when creating an entry, it means:

  • The organiser has not created a section for that specific combination
  • You need to choose a different combination that matches an available section

What to Do

  1. Check the event's available sections (shown in the entry form dropdown)
  2. Adjust your age group, style, level, or performance type to match an available section
  3. If you believe a section is missing, contact the event organiser. They can add new sections at any time before entries close

How Sections Work in Practice

  • Entries are grouped by section for scheduling and judging
  • Each section is scored independently. Entries only compete against others in the same section
  • Judges are assigned to sections, not individual entries
  • Results and placements are awarded per section
